In a city as large and fast-growing as Houston, Texas, everyday acts such as crossing a street, boarding a bus, or even entering a building can become significant obstacles for people with disabilities. While Houston is often praised for its economic growth and development, its infrastructure reveals a persistent failure to account for the needs of all its residents. Houston must adopt universal design principles in urban planning because the infrastructure that exists currently excludes many individuals with disabilities, harmful social and political biases continue to shape policy decisions, and because inclusive design ultimately strengthens entire communities instead of only serving a certain group of people.
